Summer Time

Summer time
By Coach John Daly July 6, 2009

For most people, summer time is a time where things change a little bit, hopefully for the better. Some people are able to take time away from work for a vacation, either traveling far away from home or staying close. Here in Michigan, many people head up north; camping, cottages, golf, boating, shopping, eating, etc.  Michigan has just about anything you want to do. I know many states have a ton of great things to do during summer time.

Summer also lets a lot of people get back to traditions. Whether it’s the get togethers with family and friends, swimming, grilling out, taking walks, etc., people always tend to do some enjoyable things during the summer. Hopefully times can slow down for most of us where we can find a chance to rest and relax. Recharging the batteries so to speak, is a very important item for our health, both mentally and physically. There are so many ways for people to reconnect and recharge, we must realize we just have to make the time to do just that.

My wife and I got a chance to volunteer in Detroit over the 4th of July weekend at a Detroit taste-fest festival. Her employer needed volunteers so we talked about it and she signed both of us up. We had fun working the beer tent. We met a lot of nice people during our shift. We saw a ton of people having fun, relaxing, recharging their batteries, eating, drinking and dancing; all on a nice holiday weekend. We both commented how nice it was to see people having fun without having any problems going on. People were getting along and being nice to each other.

The one thing I came away with and I told my wife about this while we were walking back to our car, was that with all the differences in the world between people, we are all really more alike than we are different. This was a great example of this fact. Another item for summer time is family. Hopefully it is a time for most people to get together with family members. It’s a time to reconnect with family members, perhaps at a wonderful family reunion. For many, it’s time to maybe mend fences and make things right, repairing relationships from an earlier problem or misunderstanding. Summertime is a great time to make time for others. It just might be enough time to make some changes not only in your life, but maybe in someone else’s life too.

Take a look in your life right now. Is there a family member or friend that you have not talked with in awhile? Maybe it’s someone that you’ve been trying to get together with, now is the time.

If it’s important enough for you to think about, then it’s time to act on this. I’ve heard from some great leaders that if you think about doing something more than a few times, you need to act on it and not just think about it.

What will you be doing this summer to recharge and reconnect with those in your life that you need to. Think about it, plan it and act on it. I’d be interested in hearing about your progress.
